The day began in the charming village of Ollauri, where Javier Murua welcomed us and enthusiastically and knowledgeably guided us through a fascinating tour of the world of wine. We visited impressive centuries-old wineries with more than two kilometers of cellars excavated 15 meters deep in the clay soil.
These tunnels, partly the work of Galician stonemasons, hold not only wine but also history. In fact, the iconic blue stripe on Paternina bottles, linked to the Galician flag, reminds us of this connection.
The tour was organized in small groups of 12 to 15 people, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the majesty of these caves at a leisurely pace, enjoying every detail. Many of us were amazed to discover that these caves remain intact after more than 400 years.
The tour ended in the best possible way: with a tasting of white and red wines from Conde de los Andes, where we proudly toasted, wearing the commemorative apron for the 125th anniversary. All of this was accompanied by the impeccable hospitality of our host and member of the Kañoyetan Elkartea Society.
A highly recommended excursion, perfect for continuing to add memorable moments centered on culture, tradition, and the pleasure of sharing.
A tour of Rioja Alavesa to taste, discover and toast
On our way to Laguardia, we made our first stop in Briñas, where we were warmly welcomed by Marga Trujillo and her friend Begoña at the Bodega de Ramón de Ayala e Hijos. There we enjoyed a well-deserved snack that allowed us to regain our strength and continue enjoying a splendid day.
After visiting the charming medieval village of Laguardia, we headed to the Bodega Luis Alegre, where we were offered a first-class lunch: Riojan-style potatoes, Iberian pork cheeks with Idiazábal cheese sauce and panadera potatoes, and as a finishing touch, a delicious cheesecake from the vineyard. All of this was paired with white and red wines from the winery itself, made with care and tradition.
The visit to the winery was especially interesting. We explored its modern facilities and learned about its production techniques, from the concrete tanks to the French oak barrels, where wines are aged and reach their peak thanks to the constant work and careful development process they've perfected over the years. The tour of its vineyards, with spectacular views of the Sierra Cantabria, and the final tasting left us completely enchanted.
Guided by the Marketing Manager, we enjoyed clear and detailed explanations about the secrets of its production, which allowed us to further appreciate the quality of its wines and the entire winemaking tradition of La Rioja Alavesa.
Before returning, and by democratic decision, we made one last stop in Labastida to close the day with refreshments. Finally, we returned home with the satisfaction of having lived a unique, perfectly organized experience.
A day that will remain in the memory of our 125th Anniversary, and that would not have been possible without the collaboration of Javier Murua (Grupo Muriel), Marga Trujillo (Viña Santurnia, recognized as the second best white wine from Rioja 2025 with Deóbriga), and the excellent catering service for our members and companions.
